Results of AFL Game for the Memorial - 20 August 2008

The Australian Peacekeeper Memorial Project (APMP) held a fundraising activity on Sunday 17th August at the MCG. APMP Vice Chairman Matt Burke OAM, led from the front in organising the fundraising activity with the AFL's, Richmond Football Club. Matt has been a volunteer with Richmond for the past fourteen years.

The "Peacekeeper Bear" was launched on the AFL's Footy Show last Thursday night. "Peacekeeper Bear" was available to fans during matchday to help raise funds needed to construct the Peacekeeping Memorial. Part of the proceeds of each sale is being donated by "Bears Over There" to the APMP.

The Richmond Football Club's President lunch were host to General Peter John Cosgrove, AC, MC (Retd), and APMP Chairman Maj General Tim Ford AO (Retd).

Approximately 44,500 people attended the game on Sunday. By the end of the game, over $6,700 was raised from the "tin rattle", and $2,700 from the sale of the "Peacekeeper Bear". In addition, over 800 orders have been placed for the Bear from people all over the country, and more than 300 order forms were handed out.

Awareness of the APMP has been raised to a new level, certainly in Melbourne and many parts of Victoria. In fact when the "Peacekeeper Bear" was launched on the Footy Show last week, Channel 9 and the Richmond Football Club received hundreds of phone calls the next day, from all across the nation regarding the Bear.

The event would not have been a success with the support of numerous individuals and organisations. As such, the Richmond Football Club has become a "Friend of Peacekeeping". In addition the following organisations are now Supporters of the Memorial (in no particular order);

Many thanks also go to the "Tin Rattlers", which consisted of approximately 30 soldiers from the Army Logistics Training Center, members of the APPVA, and the fans of the AFL who generously dipped into their pockets.

The results of the game were Richmond 105 to Hawthorn's 76 points.
