Governor-General's Reception - 25 October 2007

On Thursday, 25 October, His Excellency, the Governor-General of Australia, Major General Michael Jeffery, AC, CVO, MC, hosted a reception for the Australian Peacekeeping Memorial Project at Admiralty House in Sydney. The reception was to thank supporters for the progress made so far on the Peacekeeping Memorial.

The Reception was opened by the Governor-General. He noted the importance of a national memorial being built to honour the service and sacrifice of those Australian's who have, and are currently serving overseas on UN Peacekeeping Missions and other Peace Operations sanctioned by the UN and the Australian Government. He addressed the proud record of achievement of Australian's in these operations for over 60 years, and the difficulties and dangers that were often faced in such operations. He noted that very fittingly a site for the Memorial had been allocated on ANZAC Parade in Canberra and encouraged all Australian's to support the Project.

Over 50 people were in attendance including patrons and members of the project committee plus key stake-holders and sponsors from the Australian Defence Force, the Australian Federal, State and Territory Police, the United Nations Association of Australia, the United Nations Police Association of Australia, the Australian Peacekeeper and Peacemaker Veterans' Association, the Returned and Services League, and sponsors.

During the Reception it was announced that PDL Toll was pledging a donation of $200,000 towards the construction of the Memorial, and that the Queensland Branch of the RSL had pledged $10,000.
