RSL National Congress Motion 2.6.13 - 13 September 2006

The 2006 National Congress of the Returned and Services League of Australia was held in Perth from 12-14 September. Amongst the many topics considered during the two days proceedings was a motion by the Victorian Branch 'that the RSL supports the Australian Peacekeeping memorial to be built on ANZAC Parade in Canberra'. The motion was seconded by the Tasmanian Branch and carried unanimously. The Rationale put forward by the Victorian Branch in support of the motion was as follows:

"On the 14th September 2007, Australia commemorates 60 years of Australian Defence Force and Police Force commitments to world peace and security. This is a significant military milestone, of which over 75,000 ADF and Police personnel have served in over 65 different countries on 66 operations throughout the world, non-stop for 60 years. The Australian Peacekeeping Memorial Project Committee has been established by Major General Tim Ford AO (Retd) a Vietnam and Peacekeeping Veteran. The project has the bilateral support of the Chief of the Australian Defence Force ACM Angus Houston, the Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police, Commissioner Mick Keelty, a large number of ex-service organisations, and a number of politicians. This is a significant memorial that will be a living memorial dedicated to those men and women who have paid the supreme sacrifice as the operational tempo for the deployment of ADF troops and Police officers continues now and well into the future."
